“It gives you an ‘I can do that’ attitude when you see another girl that can. Great experience, great group, great setting!”
Helen Hall, climbing clinic

The clinics are in the traditional town of Rjukan, a few hours north west of Oslo. Rjukan is a popular learning ground for ice climbing, and rightly so. There’s a fantastic array of easily accessed ice climbs of every grade and length, which lend themselves perfectly to introducing and improving techniques, free from avalanches, deep wading to get to routes and the sometimes tiresome adventures to access our beloved Scottish winter routes.

As the routes are generally less than 10 minutes drive away and are only a few minutes to walk to, a lot more time is spent ‘on the ice’. In the evenings we’ll relax in the sauna and hot springs across the road, eat and do extra skills sessions when you have the energy and inclination.

Clinics are tailored to your needs and include opportunities for personal coaching, becoming a competent second, dealing with varied ice conditions, dry tooling, learning to lead, psychological coping strategies, pushing your technical limit, multi pitch routes, abseiling, placing ice protection, belaying and anchors.

The clinics will be run on 1:2 and 1:3 ratios through the week to maximise your learning opportunities, interaction and fun.

Costs include accommodation, group equipment, transport while in Norway (including to & from the airport in Norway), and all instruction. The clinics will run at a minimum of 1:2 ratio. Flights to and from Oslo and food, are not included.

The accommodation is in the ‘Rjukan Hytteby’, cosy chalets with self-catering facilities and great heating! Although they can sleep 6, we keep the number down to 4 to allow room for drying and lounging. Check them out at www.rjukan-hytteby.no.

What equipment should I bring?

Want to see some snow & ice pictures?

Here is a map to show you where Rjukan is.

Flights to Oslo Torp from Liverpool, Edinburgh & London Stanstead can be bought from Ryanair. Be careful with the luggage - booking extra normal bags as these don't actually give you extra weight allowance!

Would you like to know what the temperature is in Rjukan right now?

You don't need a guide book if you're coming with us, but just in case you like to collect them, you want'Heavy Water' by Jon Haukassveen & Tom Atle Bordevik, ISBN 1 873341 46 6. You can get it at Rockfax.
